What that support looks like

Practical help

Much like a usual PA, I can take day-to-day administrative and organisational tasks off your plate.

  • Navigating benefits and care systems
  • Completing applications — Blue Badge, LPAs, benefits
  • Coming with you to appointments, and taking notes to keep or share
  • Personal or professional letter writing
  • Tidying and organising your domestic admin — bills, accounts
  • Diary management, patient liaison, talking to doctors and pharmacies
Things I’m not best placed to help with

I’d rather tell you straight than take work I can’t do well. For these, here’s who to ask — and I’m happy to do the asking for you.

  • Disability aids — LRU or your hospice
  • Pain management — your GP or hospice
  • Managing medication — your pharmacy
  • Cleaning and gardening — Age UK

Supporting wellbeing

From completing bucket-list items to sorting out the attic — anything that relieves stress or adds purpose can make a real difference.

  • Guided artistic self-expression — art, writing, poetry, floristry
  • Help to finish projects you’ve already started
  • Organising possessions, or finding them positive new homes
  • Making meaningful gifts and keepsakes for the people you love
  • Support with difficult conversations and relationships
Other kinds of wellbeing support
  • Spiritual support — your religious community, or hospital and hospice chaplaincy
  • Counselling and befriending services
  • Mindfulness, meditation and complementary therapies

Planning ahead

This may seem counter-intuitive, but thinking about the future can help you feel more in control now. The earlier we talk, the more likely you are to get the care you actually want.

  • Setting out your needs and wishes for care — who, where, how
  • Understanding care options, and the impact on the people around you
  • Instructing medical professionals — LPAs, DNARs, ADRTs
  • Choosing a funeral director and saying what you want that to look like
  • Talking through your will, or drafting a Letter of Wishes to sit alongside it
  • Digital legacy planning, and thinking through organ donation
Where you’ll need someone else

I can help with the most straightforward wills and letters only.

  • Will writing — a solicitor or accredited will writer
  • Financial advice — an independent financial adviser
  • Social care assessment — your local social services

Shortly before a death

In the weeks around a death it helps to have a guiding hand — someone to hold the practicalities so you can be present for the rest.

  • Understanding hospice care, and drawing up clear plans and preferences
  • What may happen, what needs doing, and where there’s room for something meaningful
  • Choosing a funeral director

In the first days after a death

Some things must be done by the next of kin; some you might choose to do. I can share what I know and take on as much or as little as you want.

  • Understanding how much time you can spend with the person who has died
  • Help with washing and dressing the body, or arranging spiritual support
  • Registering the death
  • Telling close friends and relatives
  • Arranging a funeral

The weeks and months that follow

The admin of a death arrives slowly and lasts a long time. It’s the part people are least warned about.

  • Informing financial accounts and organisations
  • Returning medical equipment
  • Keeping track of what’s done and what’s outstanding
Where you’ll need someone else
  • Probate and property clearance
  • Inheritance tax
  • Bereavement support — Cruse and other bereavement charities

Getting your own affairs in order

Most of us don’t want to think about our own deaths. Taking the time to work out what you’d want, before anyone needs to know, turns out to be one of the kindest things you can do.

  • Outlining key wishes for your funeral
  • Organising accounts and paperwork so someone can pick them up
  • Planning for your digital legacy
  • Putting Lasting Powers of Attorney in place
  • Registering and sharing your wishes — organ donation, ADRTs
  • Working out who your executors should be

When I wrote my own will, the hold-up wasn’t the writing — it was deciding how to divide my belongings. I needed an impartial person to think out loud with. I can be that person for you.

If what you need isn’t here, give me a call and tell me what’s on your mind. If I’m not the right person, I’ll point you to someone who is — and help you get there.

Why this exists

Wrapping Up isn’t really about dying. It’s about preparation, agency, and making space for living.

By dealing with practical matters early and with confidence, we create room for connection and feel more in control — and make sure the support we get reflects who we are and what matters to us.

My hope is that talking about dying, and making plans, becomes a normal, supported part of life. Not something left until a crisis.

Katie, founder of Wrapping Up, standing in a park in Margate.

About

I’m Katie.

I’ve been a florist, a funeral director, a mental health worker and a wellbeing practitioner at Pilgrims Hospices. Five years leading an award-winning funeral directors taught me what’s possible around a death — and how rarely anyone is told.

I’m creative, down-to-earth and solution-focused. I combine artistic training with a history of operational management, which is a long way of saying: I’m good at the practical stuff, and I’m not frightened of the conversation.
